Join ceramic designer Alex Allday in her studio at Middleport Pottery for a 4 week ceramic design course that will enable you to challenge your creativity in a fun and stimulating environment and equip you with a variety of different skills and knowledge within ceramics and surface design.
During this 4 week course you will learn the process of slip casting to cast your own stem vase, tealight holders and/or planter pots in porcelain. You will then be shown a variety of surface decoration techniques and how to fettle/clean up your pieces ready to be fired. In addition you will have the opportunity to design and develop your own surface transfers that will be printed ready to use on your final pieces.

Description
Week 1
Slip Casting
An introduction to the slip casting process using ready made plaster moulds. You will be able to cast your own stem vase as well as tealights holders and/ or planter pots using a specialty high quality porcelain slip. You will have the opportunity to cast up to 5 pieces.
Week 2
Surface Decoration Techniques
You will be shown demonstrations of different surface decoration techniques using coloured slips, stains and a variety of tools to create sgraffito, textures and patterns. You’ll have the opportunity to sketch and draw your own designs before applying them straight onto your pieces and can practise the different techniques onto prepared handmade porcelain tiles.
Week 3
Design your own transfers
Refine and finish the initial surface decoration techniques on your pieces ready for bisque firing. You will also be shown how to fettle/ clean up all of your finished pieces before they go into the kiln. Start to design and develop patterns and imagery for your own printed transfers that you will apply to some of your pieces in week 4.
Week 4
Decorating With Transfer Prints
You will be shown how to decorate your final pieces with your own printed transfer designs to create interesting compositions for additional surface decoration onto your pieces.

All of the necessary materials and equipment needed for the course will be provided and are included within the cost.
I will fire your pieces ready for the following session, which is also included within the cost.
With keeping it a small group of a maximum of 3 people allows for one on one tuition and support throughout.
At the start of each week you will be given the aims and objectives of the session followed by a detailed demonstration from myself for each activity.
All abilities welcome and you do not need to have prior knowledge and experience in ceramics.
Where old clothing, I will provide aprons.
Tea and Coffee will be provided.

If you have any particular designs, patterns and objects for inspiration that you want to work from please bring them along.
